Pomija wszakże ten komentarz jeden ważny aspekt: deficyt to zobowiązanie warunkowe i w przyszłości (często odległej), podatek – bieżące. Dlatego deficyty są tak bardzo popularne, szczególnie w państwach demokratycznych („to poprzednia ekipa zostawiła gigantyczny deficyt, my jesteśmy niewinni!”).
